What this tool answers
You need a first-pass oil drain pan capacity before buying a waste-oil drain tank or low-profile pan for DIY or shop oil changes. The calculator estimates required gallons from (sump_qt ÷ 4) × jobs, then names the smallest class on this site’s ladder (8, 15, or 20 gallons) that clears the estimate. It is not a hazardous-waste permit, bay layout, or substitute for local disposal rules.
Quarts to gallons and job count
Four quarts equal one gallon. Required gallons ≈ (engine oil fill in quarts ÷ 4) × whole-number oil changes before you empty the pan. Use the published sump fill, not curb-weight analogies or unrelated shop tools.
Why headroom and disposal still matter
A drain pan that is “full” on paper can splash or overflow when hot oil pours or the pan is rolled. Leave unused volume. Never dump used oil on the ground or into household trash where prohibited — take waste oil to an approved recycler or collection site. Confirm the live published capacity on the merchant page before purchase.
Class ladder on this site
Classes are returned as gallon ids: 8, 15, and 20. The tool picks the smallest class whose rated gallons are greater than or equal to required gallons. Inputs are sump_qt and jobs only.
When the answer is NO_MATCH
If required capacity exceeds 20 gallons (for example 20 qt × 8 jobs → 40 gal), this site returns NO_MATCH for its published class ladder. Typical next steps: empty more often, use a larger industrial tank, or professional waste-oil equipment. Do not force an undersized consumer pan.
